P0121 — Throttle Position Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance
P0121 often puts the vehicle into reduced power, because the module cannot trust what the throttle is telling it. On drive-by-wire vehicles a carboned throttle body is a common and cheap cause.
Expect reduced power, hesitation or an idle that will not settle. Many vehicles limit throttle deliberately, so acceleration may be severely restricted until the fault is repaired. This code will cause an emissions test failure.
What P0121 means
The module cross-checks throttle position against airflow, manifold pressure and, on drive-by-wire systems, a second sensor inside the same housing that must agree with the first. P0121 means the signal is present but implausible for the conditions. Because uncommanded throttle opening is a safety concern, most vehicles respond by limiting power rather than by trusting the reading — which is why the symptom is usually dramatic even when the cause is a dirty throttle plate.

Symptoms you may notice
What causes P0121
Carbon around the throttle plate
Deposits stop the plate closing fully or moving smoothly, so reported position and actual airflow disagree. Cleaning resolves it in many cases, provided the relearn procedure follows.
Common misdiagnosis
Carry out the throttle relearn after cleaning. Without it the module keeps its old learned closed position and the fault appears unfixed.
Throttle position sensor worn
The sensor wears at the positions the throttle sits at most, producing a dead spot the module reads as implausible. Common on higher-mileage vehicles with a separate sensor.
Wiring or connector fault
A corroded pin or a chafed wire produces an erratic signal. Wiggling the harness while watching live data is usually enough to find it.
Throttle actuator motor failed
On drive-by-wire vehicles the motor that moves the plate can fail, so commanded and actual position never agree. Usually needs the throttle body replaced as an assembly.
How to diagnose it
Sweep the throttle while watching live data
With the ignition on, open the pedal slowly from closed to full and watch the reported percentage. It should rise smoothly with no jumps or dropouts.
Compare the two throttle sensor signals
On drive-by-wire vehicles, read both sensors together. They are designed to disagree in a fixed pattern, and a departure from it sets this code.
Inspect and clean the throttle body
Look at the plate and bore for carbon. Clean with throttle body cleaner and then carry out the relearn procedure for the vehicle.
Safety
Do not force a drive-by-wire plate open by hand. The gears in the actuator are easily damaged.
Check supply, ground and signal at the connector
Confirm the reference voltage and ground at the sensor connector, then watch the signal while flexing the harness to expose an intermittent fault.

Common questions
Why has the car lost power?
The module cannot trust the throttle signal, and uncommanded throttle opening is a safety risk. Limiting power is the deliberate safe response, not a further fault.
Will cleaning the throttle body fix it?
Often, when carbon is the cause. The step that is usually missed is the relearn procedure afterwards — without it the module keeps its old learned closed position.
Can I drive like this?
To reach a workshop, gently. Severely reduced power on a fast road is itself a hazard, so avoid motorways until it is repaired.
