What P0131 means

A healthy upstream oxygen sensor swings continuously between roughly 0.1 and 0.9 volts as the module trims fuel back and forth across the ideal ratio. P0131 means the voltage is stuck near the bottom of that range. That can mean the sensor is broken, that the circuit has a fault, or that the engine really is running that lean and the sensor is reporting it accurately. Replacing the sensor without checking fuel trims is how a vacuum leak becomes an expensive non-repair.
