P0172 — System Too Rich (Bank 1)
P0172 is the mirror of P0171: too much fuel rather than too little. It wastes fuel, fouls plugs, and unburnt fuel reaching the catalytic converter will eventually destroy it.
The engine usually runs, though it may idle roughly, smell of fuel or produce black smoke. Prolonged rich running washes oil from the bores and destroys the catalytic converter. This code will cause an emissions test failure.
What P0172 means
The module trims fuel using feedback from the upstream oxygen sensor. When it has to remove a large proportion of the commanded fuel and still cannot reach the correct mixture, it concludes the excess is outside its authority and sets P0172. The cause is either more fuel arriving than commanded — leaking injectors, high rail pressure — or the module being told there is more air than there really is, which makes it inject fuel that has nowhere to burn.

What causes P0172
Injector leaking or stuck open
An injector that does not seal adds fuel continuously rather than in a metered pulse. Often shows as a strong fuel smell after switching off, and can hydrolock an engine in severe cases.
Airflow sensor over-reporting
A sensor reading high makes the module inject fuel for air that is not arriving. Less common than the under-reporting that causes lean codes, but it produces exactly this result.
Fuel pressure too high
A failed regulator or a blocked return line raises rail pressure, so every injector pulse delivers more fuel than the module intended. Check pressure against specification rather than assuming.
Coolant temperature sensor reading cold
A sensor stuck low makes the module think the engine is always warming up, so it runs the enrichment a cold engine needs permanently. Cheap part, and a classic cause of a rich condition with no other symptoms.
Common misdiagnosis
Check the coolant temperature the module is reading before replacing fuel components. A sensor stuck cold produces a permanent rich condition for a few dollars.
How to diagnose it
Read fuel trims and the coolant temperature together
Strongly negative trim confirms the module is removing fuel. Check the coolant reading at the same time: if it says the engine is cold when it is not, that alone explains the enrichment.
Read the spark plugs
Remove a plug and look at it. Sooty black deposits confirm a rich mixture and tell you whether it affects one cylinder or the whole bank.

Let the engine cool before removing plugs from an aluminium head.
Check fuel pressure against specification
Fit a gauge and compare rail pressure at idle and under load against the manufacturer figure. High pressure delivers more fuel per pulse than commanded.

Compare airflow against expectation
