P0217 means the engine has already overheated. Stop as soon as it is safe to do so. Aluminium heads warp and head gaskets fail within minutes of overheating, and the damage does not reverse when it cools down.

The module records P0217 when coolant temperature exceeds the threshold the manufacturer considers safe. Unlike most codes, this one describes damage in progress rather than a fault to schedule. Modern engines use aluminium heads that expand faster than the iron blocks they sit on, so sustained overheating warps the mating face and fails the gasket. The cost difference between stopping immediately and driving another ten minutes is frequently the difference between a thermostat and an engine rebuild.

How to diagnose it

Stop the vehicle and let it cool completely

Pull over safely and switch off. Do not open the expansion tank or radiator cap. Wait until the engine is cold to the touch, which usually takes at least an hour.

Safety

Coolant in a hot system is above its boiling point and under pressure. Opening the cap releases scalding steam and liquid, and causes severe burns.

Check the coolant level and look for leaks

With the engine cold, check the level against the marks and inspect hoses, the radiator, the water pump area and the ground under the vehicle for evidence of loss.
