P0217 — Engine Over Temperature Condition
P0217 means the engine has already overheated. Stop as soon as it is safe to do so. Aluminium heads warp and head gaskets fail within minutes of overheating, and the damage does not reverse when it cools down.
Do not continue driving. Pull over safely, switch the engine off, and let it cool completely before opening anything. Continuing risks a warped head, a failed gasket, or a seized engine. This code will cause an emissions test failure.
What P0217 means
The module records P0217 when coolant temperature exceeds the threshold the manufacturer considers safe. Unlike most codes, this one describes damage in progress rather than a fault to schedule. Modern engines use aluminium heads that expand faster than the iron blocks they sit on, so sustained overheating warps the mating face and fails the gasket. The cost difference between stopping immediately and driving another ten minutes is frequently the difference between a thermostat and an engine rebuild.

What causes P0217
Coolant lost through a leak
A hose, radiator, water pump seal or heater core leak drops the level until there is not enough coolant to carry heat away. The most common cause, and the reason the level should be checked before anything else once the engine is cool.
Thermostat stuck closed
The opposite failure to P0128. Stuck shut, coolant never reaches the radiator and temperature climbs quickly under any load. Cheap part, serious consequence.
Cooling fan not operating
A failed fan, relay or control circuit causes overheating in traffic while the vehicle behaves normally at road speed. That pattern — hot in queues, fine on the motorway — points here almost on its own.
Water pump failed or head gasket breached
A pump that no longer circulates, or a gasket letting combustion gas into the coolant, both overheat the engine. A gasket breach often shows as bubbling in the expansion tank and is frequently the consequence of an earlier overheat rather than its cause.
Common misdiagnosis
If the engine has overheated severely, check for head gasket damage before assuming the original fault is the only repair needed.
How to diagnose it
Stop the vehicle and let it cool completely
Pull over safely and switch off. Do not open the expansion tank or radiator cap. Wait until the engine is cold to the touch, which usually takes at least an hour.
Safety
Coolant in a hot system is above its boiling point and under pressure. Opening the cap releases scalding steam and liquid, and causes severe burns.
Check the coolant level and look for leaks
With the engine cold, check the level against the marks and inspect hoses, the radiator, the water pump area and the ground under the vehicle for evidence of loss.
Confirm the cooling fan runs
Start the engine and let it warm with the vehicle stationary, watching for the fan to start. Alternatively command it on with a scanner.
Safety
The fan can start without warning. Keep hands and clothing clear of it whenever the ignition is on.
Check for combustion gas in the coolant
Use a block tester on the expansion tank. Bubbling that continues with the engine running, or a positive chemical test, indicates a head gasket breach.
