P0480 — Cooling Fan 1 Control Circuit
P0480 means the module cannot control the cooling fan. The vehicle may run normally on the open road and overheat in traffic, which makes this more serious than it first appears.
The engine may run at normal temperature while moving and overheat in stop-start traffic. Watch the temperature gauge continuously, and stop if it climbs. This code will cause an emissions test failure.
What P0480 means
The module commands the cooling fan based on coolant temperature, air conditioning demand and vehicle speed, and monitors the circuit that does it. P0480 means the circuit is not behaving as expected — commonly a failed relay, a blown fuse or damaged wiring rather than the fan motor itself. The risk is specific: at road speed there is enough airflow through the radiator without the fan, so the fault stays hidden until the vehicle is stationary in traffic, which is exactly when overheating does its damage.

What causes P0480
Fan relay failed
The relay carries the fan’s substantial current and its contacts burn over time. It is the most common cause, inexpensive, and often accessible in the engine bay fuse box.
Fuse blown
A fuse that has blown once may simply be age; one that blows repeatedly indicates a shorted motor or harness and must be traced rather than replaced again.
Common misdiagnosis
A fuse that blows again immediately means a short in the circuit. Fitting a larger fuse to stop it blowing risks a fire.
Wiring or connector damaged
The fan connector sits at the front of the vehicle where water, salt and stone damage reach it. Corroded pins are common on older vehicles.
Fan motor failed or seized
A motor with worn brushes or a seized bearing draws excessive current or none at all. Often audible as a groan before it stops entirely.
How to diagnose it
Command the fan on with a scanner
Use bidirectional control to run the fan. Whether it responds at all separates a control fault from a supply or motor fault.
Safety
The fan can start without warning whenever the ignition is on. Keep hands, tools and clothing clear of it.
Check the fan fuse and relay
Test the fuse in place with a meter rather than by eye. Swap the relay with an identical one elsewhere in the box and re-test.
Apply power to the fan directly
With the fan unplugged, apply battery voltage to the motor through a fused lead. A motor that does not run, or runs slowly and noisily, has failed.
Safety
Fuse the test lead and keep clear of the blades. An unfused lead into a shorted motor is a fire risk.
Check the control wiring back to the module
Confirm the module drives the relay control wire on command, and check continuity from the relay to the fan and to ground.
